About Pulmonary Function Testing

Pulmonary Function Testing is a comprehensive test that allows a Respiratory Therapist and your referring physician to determine if you have any conditions that could be affecting your breathing, such as asthma, COPD / Emphysema, Long COVID, interstitial lung disease, and others.

Spirometry is a form of lung function testing that provides quick insight into breathing conditions, responses to treatment, and also serves as an alternative for patients who cannot tolerate a full pulmonary function test.

Both are performed by our Respiratory Therapists and interpreted by Pulmonary Physicians before the results are returned to the referring physician.

What to expect from Pulmonary Function Testing:

Before Pulmonary Function Testing or  Spirometry appointment, PIH’s team will complete a screening assessment at the time of appointment booking.

During your appointment, the Respiratory Therapist will review the screening assessment, obtain vital signs, and conduct the intended study. Each assessment is 45 minutes. Patients will receive educational resources for their study, interpretation information of their lung function, and a follow-up with the Respiratory Therapist if needed for education and ongoing Pulmonary Function Testing assessment in response to therapy.
